Australian baseball legend and two-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees, Graeme Lloyd joins the Melbourne Aces as their new pitching coach.

The Melbourne Aces have added more strength to its coaching roster ahead of the 2021/22 Australian Baseball League season, adding Australian baseball legend Graeme Lloyd as pitching coach.

It continues from the announcement two months ago where the Aces named Peter Moylan as the team’s new manager. Moylan was the Aces pitching coach last season before his promotion to the main role in April.

Melbourne Aces manager Moylan says he looks forward to having Lloyd’s experience at the club. He also believes he’ll be a valuable asset as they aim for their third consecutive Claxton Shield title.

“To be able to bring someone who has the baseball resume of Graeme Lloyd is a luxury we are so lucky to have. I can’t wait to see the impact he will have on not only our pitching staff but our club in general”, Moylan said.

Lloyd has been a member of the coaching staff of three ABL teams since the latest iteration of the league began in 2010. He began the last decade as a pitching coach with the Perth Heat, helping the organisation to four titles in five years.

Most recently, Lloyd was the manager of one of the league’s newest teams, Geelong-Korea, for its second season, throughout 2019/20. Geelong-Korea was not involved in the 2020/21 season due to border issues amid the COVID-19 situation.

Lloyd is one of Australia’s finest baseballers and one of 35 natives to make their way to the Major Leagues. He is Australia’s most decorated player, finishing a 10-year Major League career where he played across seven different organisations.

A pitcher during his career, Lloyd is a two-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees and a silver medallist with the national side at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. His efforts have seen him inducted into the Australian Baseball Hall of Fame and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame.

The Melbourne Aces celebrated back-to-back Claxton Shields earlier this year, beating Lloyd’s former team Perth in the Championship Game. The Aces will be announcing more additions to Moylan’s staff in the leadup to the next season.
