The Melbourne Vixens have been dealt a huge blow just a month before the Super Netball season is set to begin.

Melbourne Vixens is reeling after the club was dealt a huge blow just a month before the Super Netball season is set to begin.

Vixens superstar Liz Watson has been ruled out of the 2021 Suncorp Super Netball season. The midcourter will have surgery today on the Navicular bone.

The premiership player has battled with a foot injury but has been managed during her career, but unfortunately, the injury has reached a point where surgery has become the only option.

Although she won’t pull on the vixens’ dress on the court she won’t be too far away as she will remain a part of the Vixens squad in an off-court leadership role.

The Vixens 2020 co-captain was excited for the season ahead

“I was really enjoying the pre-season and looking forward to playing in Melbourne again this year,” said Watson.

“This news came as quite a shock, but speaking to the surgeon, it was clear that this had to happen now for me to get back out there and play.

“The medical staff at the Vixens and Diamonds have been great in helping me manage this injury, and I thank them for the support so far and know I’m in good hands for my recovery.”

Watson is a big loss to an already new look vixens’ side. With Vixens legends Caitlin Thwaites and Tegan Phillips retired after the clubs 2020 championship season.

The news comes after Sunshine Coast Lightning recruit Ashlee Unie went down with a suspected knee injury in last week’s practice game against the Giants.

The Vixens are yet to name a replacement for Watson, with the clubs season set to kick off on May 1st in a Grand Final rematch against the Fever.
