Giants Netball have today announced that promising young defender Matilda McDonell will remain at the club for a further two seasons.

McDonell is a promising young defender, who brings a passion and hunger like no other, whether she’s on the court or the sideline.

A member of the Giants Netball franchise since she finished high school, next year will be the 21-year-old’s fourth season in orange.

Playing a total of 12 games this year, McDonell secured one rebound and six intercepts as well as 17 deflections to earn herself a spot in the Australian Diamonds Development Squad.

With eyes only for the ball, McDonell has put her body on the line all season for the Giants, clashing with some of Super Netball’s best competitors.

A New South Wales pathway athlete, McDonell has held her own against international talent this season, playing her best games against cross-town rivals, the NSW Swifts.

When playing the Swifts this year, McDonell collected two intercepts and three deflections in the 61 minutes she played across four games.

An integral part of the Giants Netball family, McDonell said she was excited to be offered a playing contract for the next two years.

“I absolutely love this club and truly believe we have something special building here,” she said.

“We have this incredible environment which focuses on the development of both our youth and experience where we all push to get the best out of each other every session.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that we can’t take that extra step next season and bring home the trophy.”

McDonell joins Dwyer, Brandley and Price, becoming the fourth player announced to join Giants Netball for 2022 and beyond, with more reveals to be made in the coming week.
