After two Grand Final losses the Lions have won the 2021 AFLW Premiership, defeating Adelaide at the Adelaide Oval.

The Brisbane Lions are the 2021 AFLW Premiers after defeating the Adelaide Crows by 18 points at the Adelaide Oval.

It was goal for goal in the first term, with Brisbane goal sneak Courtney Hodder opening the account for the Lions with a spectacular goal. The Crows answered through Adelaide gun Stevie-Lee Thompson.

The Lions backline was a brick wall, limiting the Crows at almost every turn, with the trio of Kate Lutkins, Emily Bates and Emma Zielke dominant as always.

Brisbane livewires Hodder and Jess Wuetschner put on a clinic with two electrifying goals each.

The 3rd quarter was sheer dominance from the Lions keeping the home side goalless and kicking three of their own, coming from Wuetschner, Lauren Arnell and Isabel Dawes.

To Adelaide’s credit they never gave up, with a goal in the first few minutes of the final quarter from Eloise Jones. For the first half of that final term the Crows were about to lock it in their forward half of the ground.

The Grand Final didn’t come without its heartbreak, Lions captain Emma Zielke and stand in Crows captain Angela Foley both ruled out of the final term.

For Lions midfielder Ally Anderson it was 10th time lucky, having played in nine losing grand finals up until this point.

“To get 10th time lucky is an unreal, I still can’t believe it…it’s so surreal,” Anderson told Lions Media post match

“That’s what got us here, one: our pressure, and two: just the evenness across the team and every single person to do their job, so we kept to the same sort of formula and got the job done in the end.”

Lutkins was deservedly crowned the Best on Ground, receiving the maximum three votes from four out of the five judges on the panel.

The Lions’ Premiership win was the perfect send off for stars Arnell and Zielke, the pair announcing their retirement at the end of the game.

Zielke has captained Brisbane for four seasons, including the inaugural AFLW season. She played 41 games, including both of the Lions grand final appearances in 2017 and 2018.

Arnell started at Carlton, captaining the side in its inaugural season and ran out in the first ever game of AFLW.

She moved to the Lions at the end of 2018 and has flown under the radar but played an important role in the sides road to success.

The final score line read Adelaide 3.2.20 to Brisbane’s 6.2.38.
