“It was a pretty intense and hot game, but I think my composed decision-making and skills, along with my communication with the other boys, was a strength in my game on Thursday night.”

An eye-catching pre-season has given way to a strong Opening Round for Matt Roberts, earning himself a Rising Star nomination.

Roberts made a big impact off half-back for the Swans, winning 19 disposals and taking eight marks. He also won the praise of coach John Longmire in the process.

“[Matt] played last year, he was actually playing quite well for us until he got injured, so we’ve had a bit of faith in him,” he said.

“He’s very smart, he competes really well. That’s what I’ve been pleased about. We know he’s a good ball user and a smart midfielder who’s gone back, but he competes well. Competes overhead, competes at stoppages. That’s the sort of thing he does well, and what’s shone through as a defender.

“He’ll have his hands full this week with some pretty handy forwards to deal with in front of a big crowd, but it’s all part of it.”

Roberts zeroed in on a few key elements when discussing his Rising Star nominated performance.

“I think it was probably my skills and my decision-making with the ball in hand and just being able to execute those skills under pressure,” he said.

“It was a pretty intense and hot game, but I think my composed decision-making and skills, along with my communication with the other boys, was a strength in my game on Thursday night.”

Attention now shifts for Roberts and the Swans to Collingwood at the MCG on Friday night, where a monster crowd will see the Pies unfurl their 16th flag.

Despite less than 10 games to his name, Roberts is embracing the challenge.

“It’s something that we’re all looking forward to as a group, and it’s something that will be new to me, and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into the week.”

Sydney Vs Collingwood gets underway at 7:40 pm on Friday.
