A pioneer of professional wrestling, Edge has carved an incredible career in WWE and produced one of the most memorable returns of all time.

On both facets of being a villainous heel and lovable babyface, the Rated-R Superstar became a multi-time World Champion, Royal Rumble winner and WrestleMania main eventer, just to name some significant accomplishments.

However, 2011 was when the wrestling world was shocked to it’s core where their beloved Edge was forced to retire, just eight days after successfully defending the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania 27.

The Rated-R Superstar broke his neck and had spinal fusion surgery years prior, leading to prolonged pain where MRI scans revealed he had to lace up his boots.

What then happened after is the embodiment of why you must maintain hope and faith, even if it seems like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

Rumours began to circulate before the 2020 Royal Rumble that Edge was going to make a monumental in-ring return at the event, nine years since announcing his retirement. Despite denying the reports, the former World Champion made a miraculous comeback through sheer grit and determination in his time away.

The WWE Universe was then graced with over three years of Edge, seeing that he never lost his mojo and aged like a fine wine in the ring.

Although he was unable to have one more reign as World Champion and achieve the ultimate success in his second stint, he still created special moments that will always make you admire and appreciate him.

The Rated-R Superstar recently celebrated his 25th anniversary with WWE on last week’s Smackdown and his wrestling future is now in doubt. He may elect to stay with the company he forged his legacy in, properly retire or look elsewhere to continue embarking on an illustrious career.

In light of the possibility that Edge may not return to WWE, The Inner Sanctum will look at the five best moments of Edge’s grand comeback.

5. SummerSlam 2021 match against Seth Rollins

In a rivalry that was seven years in the making, Edge and Seth Rollins had a fantastic trilogy in 2021 that commenced at SummerSlam.

It all began when the Visionary threatened to break the Rated-R Superstar’s neck in 2014, forcing John Cena to reinstate The Authority to power.

Fast forward all those years, Rollins was frustrated that Edge received a world title opportunity before him against Roman Reigns at Money in the Bank. Due to this, the former cost the challenger and it led to a thrilling encounter one month later at SummerSlam.

The Rated-R Superstar channelled his inner Brood and captured the victory by submission. The two competitors had strong in-ring chemistry and combining that with their rich story, it translated their SummerSlam contest into a classic.

4. Aligning with Damian Priest at WrestleMania 38

Edge’s third WrestleMania since returning saw him compete against AJ Styles, in what many considered a dream match.

While it is debatable the contest met expectations, the ending and aftermath is what most people remember when looking back at the Rated-R Superstar vs the Phenomenal One.

Damian Priest assisted Edge to hand him the victory, giving the current Senor Money in the Bank much-needed spotlight at the time. Their partnership was the first step in ultimately forming The Judgment Day, who have ran riot on all three brands for 18 months.

While Edge’s experience in the group was short-lived, their dominance and impact on television would not have happened without his influence, making this a true WrestleMania moment.

3. 25-year celebration match against Sheamus

When Friday Night Smackdown for Toronto on August 18 was announced, it was a unanimous view in the wrestling world that the episode would revolve around Edge and it rang true.

The former World Champion celebrated his 25th anniversary in WWE and competed against Sheamus for the first time ever in the main event.

In a touching moment the week prior, Edge revealed that the Celtic Warrior made him realise in 2019 that he could wrestle again during a mountain bike ride. The Canadian then challenged the Irishman, as the two veterans had a terrific match against each other.

It was only fitting that the Rated-R Superstar prevailed in the encounter, in what could be his final contest in WWE. If that is the case, Edge was sent off on the right note by having one last classic in front of the Toronto faithful against someone who guided him significantly during his pursuit to return.

2. Winning the 2021 men’s Royal Rumble

In his second Royal Rumble match since returning, Edge entered at number one and was virtually given no chance to emerge as that year’s WrestleMania main eventer. However, he achieved exactly that.

He outlasted 29 other men and went the distance to win the battle royal, withstanding a late charge from Randy Orton. It was a remarkable feat, considering his age to endure nearly one hour in the ring.

Not only was the victory memorable, but Edge also reunited with best friend, Christian during the contest. It was really a shame that this occurred in the Thunderdome with no fans present, but it didn’t take anything away from the moment.

The Rated-R Superstar progressed to challenge Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan in the main event of WrestleMania 37 for the Universal Championship, but unfortunately fell to the Tribal Chief’s wrath.

1. Returning at the 2020 Royal Rumble

Who could forget this? One of the greatest moments in WWE history, never mind Royal Rumble history. A shining light in what was a dark day and year, with the passing of Kobe Bryant and eruption of COVID-19 respectively.

It is a return that will always live in the minds of fans, with a highly emotional Edge emerging from gorilla position as the 21st entrant in the 2020 men’s Royal Rumble match. The Rated-R Superstar realised that his dream of coming back had come to fruition, knowing that his fate was in his own hands.

The thunderous ovation and feeling of euphoria from Houston was justified, seeing that their childhood hero still had a lot left in the tank.

Edge finished in the final three of the match, before eventually being eliminated by Roman Reigns, the same man he met in the WrestleMania main event one year later.
