On Wednesday the 15th of June, it was announced the NRLW will expand from six to ten teams for the 2023 season.

The NRLW is welcoming the Canberra Raiders, Cronulla Sharks, North Queensland Cowboys, and the West Tigers.

This past season, we saw an evolution in attacking schemes and an increase in the pace of the game.

Teams have also started to implement attacking plays from scrums, and early kicks in the set for field position and have an emphasis on repeat sets.

From the 2020 season to the 2021 season, we saw an expansion of up to three teams (the Warriors withdrew from the 2021 season.

This saw the additions of the Newcastle Knights, Gold Coast Titans, and the Parramatta Eels.

We have also seen the women’s rugby league become the most popular it has ever been.

In 2020, as that was the last season before COVID limited play – the average audience for an NRLW match on Channel Nine was about 98,000 and 35,000 on Foxtel, making the combined average 133,000 viewers.

It had improved to 150,000 people that had tuned in to watch NRLW matches on Channel Nine on average. The 53 percent increase in viewers on Nine is reflected in a similar rise on Foxtel, which has seen most games attract between 50,000 and 60,000 viewers.

The highest rating match of the season on Nine was the record-breaking 40-4 win by the Dragons over the Knights in Round 4 of the 2021 season.

This attained just over 142,000 viewers in metropolitan and regional areas on Channel Nine by itself.

The combined average has tremendously improved to 200,000 viewers, which is a 50 percent increase in comparison to 2020.

With the popularity of the NRLW rising and quickly expanding, the competition and the game are only going to get better.

In the 2021 season, the NRLW production from across all the teams has skyrocketed to new heights. The game has seen significant increases in post-contact metres, kicking metres, as well as overall scoring throughout the season by all the teams across the board.

With four more teams in the league next year, we will see the game continue to grow the more people invest in the NRLW.
