Lando Norris wins the NZGP

F1 YouTuber Josh Revell made a startling revelation on the Getting A Grip F1 podcast this week – McLaren’s Lando Norris and Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll have already won Grand Prix races.

According to the FIA, the New Zealand International is a Grand Prix race.

Listen to Josh Revell talk all things New Zealand International, the Grand Prix status, and the famous winners on Getting A Grip F1.

The GP – which is the centerpiece race of the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand during the southern hemisphere summer – was won by Stroll in 2015 before Norris took it out in 2016.

To put that into context – Bruce McLaren won it back in 1964 and more recently by Formula E driver Nick Cassidy (2012-14), Carlin Motorsport’s 2020 F2 driver Jehan Daruvala (2017), and helped launch the career of kiwi driver Liam Lawson (2019) who competed in F3 last year.

The GP offers FIA Super Licence points – the key to climbing the international motorsport ladder – to drivers competing. This has led to an almost all international grid in years gone by.

V8 Supercars driver Shane van Gisbergen took out the all-Kiwi 2021 edition this past week.
