One of Australian boxing’s fastest rising stars, Alex Winwood (3-0, 2 KOs) has only one desire dictating the direction of his boxing career.

That is, fulfilling the seemingly unbridled potential that he has shown in his short professional career to date.

Fans were given a glimpse of this in June, when ‘The A-Rock’ scored a unanimous decision win over then WBC number two contender, Reyneris Gutierrez (10-1, 2 KOs) in Perth.

Despite the impressive showing, the goal remains a humble one. He is simply aiming to become the best version of himself.

“I plan on achieving great things, but I just want to achieve whatever my very best is and that’s yet to be told,” Winwood told the media.

“I’m always pushing myself.”

In order for this to happen, the 26 year old believes he must continue to take on the toughest challenges available.

Having taken Gutierrez’s place in the WBC rankings, Winwood now has sights set on the two men in front of him: World Champion Yudai Shigeoka (8-0, 5 KOs) and number one contender Luis Angel Castillo Sotto (20-0-1, 13 KOs).

Given both are left handed fighters, it is with little wonder that the Australian has been matched with ultra tough Filipino southpaw Cris Ganoza (20-5, 10 KOs), who has also tangled with the current belt holder.

A win over Ganoza then, will tell Winwood a lot about his own career trajectory and goal of becoming champion in boxing’s lightest weight class.

“I want the best and I believe Ganoza is really the best available opponent for me,” Winwood said.

“He is a southpaw, the WBC number one contender Luis Angel Castillo Sotto is a southpaw and World Champion Shigeoka is also a southpaw.

“This is my John Wick hit list.”

For now though, focus remains purely on passing the Ganoza test.

With the 10 round bout slated to headline Dragon Fire Boxing’s ‘Thunderdome 44’ show in Perth, Winwood is aiming to progress in entertaining fashion for his hometown fans.

“I love fighting in Perth and I plan on bringing a great fight that excites all the crowd,” he concluded.
