The Melbourne Vixens secured its second win of the season against the Sunshine Coast Lightning, with Kaylia Stanton willing her side over the line.

The Melbourne Vixens secured its second win for the season after beating Sunshine Coast Lightning by three points (55-52) at John Cain Arena.

The Vixens haven’t played a Suncorp Super Netball match in three weeks which was a concern for Coach Simone McKinnis going into the game.

“It was one of my concerns that it was three weeks since we actually had an SSN game, but we’ve had a really solid tough and hard three weeks,” McKinnis said.

“We’ve made the most of it and I knew they were ready to get out there and compete.”

Vixens shooter Kaylia Stanton was named the MVP, after a rough start to her time at the Vixens, she really came into her own to help get the Vixens over the line.

“I thought Kaylia was great, she’s been working hard over these past three weeks and doing extras with our shooting group. She took it on out there and backed herself and she had a great game I’m really happy for her,” McKinnis said.

The Vixens have had a fearless team mentality which is something that Stanton embraced this week.

“It was a team mentality that we have been working on. That fearless mentality and backing ourselves that’s been a focus of ours particularly this week and she really took that on,” McKinnis said.

“Your confidence comes and your ability to back yourself comes from the work that you do in the lead up to a game.

“She’s been working exceptionally hard doing the extras and putting the shots up and that’s where your confidence comes to back yourself because you’ve done the preparation.”

It was the sides first win in Melbourne since the 2019 semi-final against the Magpies and for McKinnis it was great to get the win in front of the Vixen Army.

“It was fantastic, not being down here last year so to have that first win in a long time probably a couple of seasons in Melbourne it’s been great. I was really happy for our supporters who were down here to see us win because it’s been a while.”
