St Kilda and Richmond Football Clubs will contest in the sixth Maddie's Match, in memory of the late Maddie Riewoldt.

Thursday night’s clash between St Kilda and Richmond is bigger than just the four points – it will also be the sixth Maddie’s Match.

Maddie’s Match will raise vital funds for Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision, the foundation which raises money and awareness about Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome.

Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision chief executive Elaine Montegriffo spoke to The Inner Sanctum about the foundation and the importance of Maddie’s Match.

Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision was founded in 2015 by the Riewoldt family after the tragic passing of Maddie Riewoldt to Bone Marrow Failure Syndrome.

“Maddie had her young life cut short at just 26 after a long battle with BMFS. Her family established Maddie Riewoldt’s Vision to fund the vital medical research that will discover improved treatments and ultimately a cure for BMFS,” Ms Montegriffo told The Inner Sanctum.

Fans going to the game are encouraged to wear a bit of purple as that was Maddie’s favourite colour, with the aim to fill the stadium with the colour.

“Every year around 160 Australians are diagnosed with Bone Marrow Failure Syndromes (BMFS) most of them children and young people,” Ms Montegriffo said.

“Thousands more live with ongoing complex health issues and the side effects of current treatments. Devastatingly, fifty percent of patients do not survive.

“For the past five years ,Maddie’s Match between St Kilda and Richmond has raised awareness and vital funds for the research we support.

“The generous support of fans, sponsors, partners and government has helped us raise almost $10 million so far to support 26 research projects; but more needs to be done.

Not only will Maddie’s Match be held on Thursday night, but there will also be the inaugural ‘Ride for Maddie’ taking place during the day.

“On April 15, Maddie’s Match will take place at Marvel Stadium.

“This year, we’re turning Melbourne CBD purple to raise awareness of Bone Marrow Failure syndromes and we’re running the very first Ride for Maddie from the Mornington Peninsula to Marvel stadium!”

“Our goal this year is to raise funds to support gene therapy clinical trials for Australian patients, offering the potential of a cure to patients and their families living with inherited BMFS.”

Montegriffo is putting the call out for footy fans to donate and you can help the cause by donating at www.mrv.org.au/donations or you can text MADDIE to 0400 662 662.
