Manchester United has announced Spanish international forward Lucía García will be joining the club for the upcoming Women’s Super League on a two-year contract.

After six years with Athletic Club in Spain, the Spanish striker has decided to move her talents to the Women’s Super League.

The 23-year-old played in Spain for nine years with two clubs, Oviedo Moderno from 2013-16 and Athletic Club from 2016-22. She has also represented the Spain national team since 2018, also representing her country at U17s, U19, and U20s level.

Her goal-scoring ability is remarkable, having netted 78 goals at club level from 211 games and 36 goals at international level. Nine of those were for the Spanish national team, with the majority coming from the Spain U19s squad.

Not only can she score with ease but sets up opportunities for her teammates. Without the ball, her continued pressure on the defence puts them on the backfoot.

The wunderkind made her debut in first division at the age of 15, and has not disappointed in all of her showings, with her highest honour being the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

García was given the chance to play in the group stage during the tournament. She scored Spain’s third goal in their win over South Africa.

“The fact that a club the size of Manchester United has put their faith in me is a dream come true,” García said.

“I already feel very much at home here. There’s a great family atmosphere at the club, which is the exact environment in which I thrive.

“I will give everything I have on the field to make our fans proud, and hopefully score a few goals as well!”

The Spaniard is not just a good addition to the team, but provides the Reds with much needed skill and experience. Manchester United boss Mark Skinner is delighted to have García on board.

“We are delighted to sign Lucía to Manchester United Women. Her addition shows the continuing commitment to our teams progression,” he said about her addition to the team.

“Lucía possesses wonderful agility and the one-on-one abilities that will be exciting to our fans and the league. We now look forward to embedding her into the squad over pre-season.”
