Socceroos forward Mathew Leckie has signed a three-year-deal with A-League side Melbourne City, the club announced on Saturday.

Another Socceroo returns home.

Mathew Leckie has signed for Melbourne City, the club has announced today, following in the footsteps of teammates Jamie Maclaren and Adrian Nabbout.

Leckie will be on show every week for Australian football fans in the 2021/22 season. His signing represents another piece that will only strengthen the reigning premiers as they look to end the season on a high with a Grand Final win.

Originally from Melbourne, Leckie has spent the last decade of his career overseas in Germany. He has played for several clubs including FC Ingolstadt 04, FSV Frankfurt, Borrussia Monchengladbach and most recently, Hertha BSC.

During his time in Germany, Leckie scored ten Bundesliga goals and added a further 21 goals in the second division.

City to get even stronger

Still having time on his side, the 30-year-old Leckie returns to the A-League and becomes another Socceroo to join Patrick Kisnorbo’s ranks. With the likes of Connor Metcalfe, Curtis Good, and goal machine Jamie Maclaren already in the light blue half of Melbourne, adding a player of Leckie’s quality can only be a scary proposition for the league.

Having a player of Leckie’s calibre to add to a City side that has swept through the league this year only further adds to their attacking prowess. Despite already having several quality players, it means City has to find room in their salary cap for the international star.

With the Finals still to be played out, Melbourne City could cap off their season with a Grand Final victory.

While becoming stronger again next season.

What a thought for City fans.

Leckie deal great for Australian football

Not only is the Leckie deal great for Melbourne City, but also Australian football. It could bring some much-needed attention to the league in a time where it has been playing third fiddle to the AFL and NRL.

Mathew Leckie is another homegrown product that has returned with plenty to offer, and that is what should excite fans in a time where we so often see players who are at the end of their careers come back to the A-League. Players like Maclaren, Nabbout, and now Leckie have all returned with plenty of football left in their legs.

It appears that Melbourne City is now finally delivering.

The performances and player acquisitions that fans expected from the City Football Group is now happening.

The signing of Mathew Leckie should excite everyone who loves football in Australia, and there is nothing better than seeing our Socceroos heroes strut their stuff on home soil.
