Aussie Skye Nicolson (6-0) grinded out a hard-fought decision victory over fellow undefeated contender Tania Álvarez (7-1) to capture the WBC Silver Featherweight title.

The win for Nicolson takes her one step closer to taking on Undisputed Champion Amanda Serrano, who fights later on the same card.

Despite being a heavy underdog The Spanish fighter made the fight ugly for the Queenslander, but the range difference proved to be too much as Nicolson controlled every round.

For the first few rounds, Álvarez tried to push the action and rush Nicolson at every opportunity.

However, Álvarez’s neglected defense made it easy for the Aussie to land her shots from the outside, as Nicolson responded by throwing lead right hooks to angle out of the center line.

In the third round, Nicolson began to find a home for her jab more frequently and also started to land her straight left hand with more precision.

Mid-way into the fight, Skye started throwing shots with a lot more power to get a finish, but the Spaniard showed her toughness as she was able to absorb them well.

In the eighth and ninth rounds, it was visible to see that both fighters were starting to slow down from the high pace that had been set. Álvarez started having success with her attacks to the body, but it didn’t slow Nicolson down at all.

Álvarez’s onslaught on the body continued in the final round, with The Aussie also trying hard to find the knockout shot, but it wasn’t meant to be as the fight went to the final bell. When the scorecards were read it was Skye Nicolson who won a lopsided unanimous decision (100-90, 98-92, 97-93).

With a future fight against Amanda Serrano on her mind, winning the WBC Silver title takes her one step closer to getting into that position. It will be interesting to see where the Queensland-born fight goes from here.
