The Queen’s Birthday Honours allows for recognition of those that have made outstanding contributions to Australia.

This year, there are many names recognised for their services to sport.

Tellingly, Neale Daniher AM was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia AO, on the day that the fundraiser he kicked off for Motor Neurone Disease takes place at the MCG, while the game of celebration is played between the Melbourne Demons and Collingwood Magpies at the SCG.

Other outstanding nominees include Mr Peter Ivany (AO), who is the Chairman of the Sydney Swans Foundation, Tony Cochrane (AM) who is the Chairman of the Gold Coast Suns, and Trevor Dowdell, who has coached and consulted in rhythmic gymnastics for more than 50 years.

Former Olympian James Hewish (AM), who many will remember from the short track speed skating event in Salt Lake 2002. Hewish gave up his gold medal after he felt South Korean Apolo Ohno was unfairly disqualified, and was recognised for his ongoing service to speed skating, including years as a judge.

Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart (AM) was recognised for his lengthy contribution to rugby league, and Dr Geoffrey Thompson (AM) was recognised for years of service to sports medicine, after being recognised as the Northern Territory Australian of the Year in 2020.

Notable recipients in the OAM list include Bec Goddard, former AFLW Coach of Adelaide and now VFLW Coach at Hawthorn and Rosie King, CEO of Netball Victoria, who have each made substantial contributions to women’s sport.

Erin Phillips (OAM) was recognised for her service to Australian rules football, and to basketball. Phillips is a two-time AFLW premiership player and two-time league best and fairest with the Adelaide Crows, and an Olympic silver medallist in basketball in 2008.

The Inner Sanctum recently spoke to Phillips’ father Greg, ahead of the 2021 AFLW Grand Final.

Michael Long and Elizabeth Gosper (both OAM) were recognised each for service to sport and to the Indigenous and the disabled community respectively.
