After a successful Pride Celebration in the 2022/23 A-Leagues season, the Celebration is set to return for the 2023/24 season.

The Inner Sanctum reached out to the league for an update on whether there would be a Pride Celebration for the upcoming season, and received confirmation that there will be.

The league is still working through the final details and information will be announced in the coming months.

Pride Cup is going to be involved for the third straight year, but were unable to announce any further details.

In its annual report, the Australian Professional Leagues (APL) said an important aspect behind the 2022/23 celebration was research demonstrating that 75 per cent of LGBTI+ people believe an openly-gay spectator would not be very safe attending a sporting event.

“APL and its clubs want that statistic to improve and ensure all LGBTI+ people have access to a safe and inclusive sporting environment.”

The success of last season’s Pride Celebration saw fans turn out in droves, stadiums and teams covered in rainbow colours, and $1 from every ticket sold from the Australian-based games donated to Pride Cup.

$1 from every ticket sold for the Wellington Phoenix home game was donated to a New Zealand based LGBTI+ not for profit.

The APL also developed, in conjunction with Pride Cup, a training program for the entire league around LGBTI+ inclusion, which former Pride Cup CEO James Lolicato spoke to The Inner Sanctum about earlier this year, prior to the Pride Celebration.
