Former Eternal MMA Flyweight champion Stephen Erceg has earned the opportunity to fight for a UFC contract, leaving his divisional rivals to fight for the vacant title at Eternal 65.

Major news broke on Friday afternoon when it was announced by Eternal MMA that their Flyweight Champion, Stephen Erceg (8-1) had received a call up to fight for a UFC contract on Dana White’s Contender Series.

The announcement has been met with excitement from Australian MMA fans, specifically those in Western Australia, who have got themselves another representative on the global stage to accompany Contender Series alumni, Jack Della Maddalena (11-2, 1-0 UFC).

After a successful amateur career that included four fights in Singapore, Perth’s ‘Astroboy’ made his professional debut in 2016 with a submission victory over Ryan Robertson.

Although he lost his next fight by decision, Erceg went on to win four fights in a row before challenging for the Eternal MMA Flyweight title against Shannon Ross in 2020, a fight he would win by first round submission.

After going up in weight to defeat highly touted prospect Cody Haddon and successfully defending his title against Paul Loga, the UFC came calling. Erceg is now confirmed to be fighting on Dana White’s Contender Series, with a date for the contest unconfirmed at present.

With a record of 8-1, Erceg has established himself as one of the best grapplers in the Australian MMA scene, winning five of his eight contests by submission. Mix that with solid striking and you’ve got a fighter who could do big things in MMA’s premier organisation.

As such, the possible addition of Stephen Erceg to the UFC Roster, the future is looking brighter than ever for Australian MMA.

What does this mean for Eternal MMA’s Flyweight division?

In a previous interview with The Inner Sanctum, former Eternal MMA Flyweight champion Shannon Ross (13-5) revealed that there was speculation of his upcoming interim Flyweight title fight with Bantamweight champion Shaun Etchell (7-2) being promoted to an undisputed title fight.

With Erceg out of the picture, this has now been confirmed by the Aussie promotion. Ross and Etchell are now scheduled to fight in the co-main event of Eternal MMA 65, serving behind the Lightweight title fight between Jack Becker (10-2) and Aidan Aguilera (8-5).
