Australia’s Paige Greco has won the first Gold Medal of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games with a world record-breaking ride in the Women’s C1-C3 3000m Individual Pursuit.

Greco entered the Gold medal race as the favourite after setting a world record in the qualifying session earlier this morning. Greco rode a blistering time of 3:52.283, three seconds faster than China’s Wang Xiaomei who she ultimately faced in the final.

The South Australia native saved her best ride for the final where from the onset she looked to be the faster rider. After the first 500m, Greco led Wang by just over half a second which slowly grew lap by lap.

Entering the final 1000m Greco held a 1.839-second lead and charged home to win the Gold with a time of 3:50.815, 4.16 seconds faster than Wang who finished with Silver with a time of 3:54.975.

Greco is the first person to win a Gold at the 2020 Paralympics and the first to win Gold in the Track Cycling.
