Newtown Jets have claimed their first minor premiership since 1949 in the New South Wales Cup. Their 73-year drought for the minor premiership was clinched with a 22-all draw against the Bulldogs in the final round.

Going into the game against the Bulldogs, the Jets needed either a draw or a win to finish on top of the ladder in what was set to be a dramatic finish.

With one minute left on the clock, prop Franklin Pele was able to force a penalty from the Bulldogs defence. Former Australian Schoolboy, Mawene Hiroti was able to kick a penalty goal over the black dot earning the Jets two points and a draw.

The Jets finish the season with 16 wins, two draws and four losses. Their attacking flair has helped them gain a point differential of 254 points.

They will be hoping to advance into the Grand Final with the finals starting next week. The team is made up mostly of players training in the Sharks squad with a depth of talent.

“I congratulate all teams who took part in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup this season and the clubs who are remaining good luck in the finals series,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“I also congratulate the Newtown Jets for [winning] the Minor Premiership in The Knock-On Effect NSW Cup.

“It has been fantastic to see our Major Competitions complete their seasons and the decision to move to a traditional top five finals format should guarantee an exciting month of action for our fans in September.”
