The SANFL has today announced the new dates for the remaining minor rounds as well as finals to be completed in 2021, pushing the conclusion of the season back two weeks.

Whilst the lockdown was lifted on Wednesday this week, it was announced that no community sport competition would take place on the weekend, leaving the SANFL to have to do some reshuffling.

However, it has been revealed that the 2021 season kicks back off with a blockbuster clash between Glenelg and Norwood on Saturday, August 7, whilst West Adelaide and Sturt, Central District and South Adelaide and North Adelaide and the Eagles will all do battle.

Round 16 will also feature the Showdown between Adelaide and Port Adelaide as the curtain-raiser for the AFL Showdown.

The Grand Final will now take place on the October long weekend (October 3), a weekend after the AFL Grand Final, a date last used for the final game of the season in 2013.

“For many years, the October long weekend was a really successful tradition for the SANFL Grand Final,” SANFL Chief Executive Darren Chandler said in a statement.

“So both the League and Clubs agreed this was the most favourable date to conclude what has been another unprecedented season due to the Covid pandemic.”

The first week of finals, consisting of the elimination final and qualifying final will take place on the weekend of Saturday 11 September.

SANFL Round 16 postponed amid South Australian lockdown

What was originally a Round 16 split, has been consolidated and will now take place on Saturday, September 4 as Round 19.

Round 18 will be a split across August 21 and August 27/28.

Glenelg currently sits atop the SANFL league ladder, having won 14 games in a row without fault in 2021 – its centenary year.

The competition was postponed until June in 2020 as a result of a South Australian lockdown in March, however, the season continued towards its natural conclusion unaffected.
