Melbourne City has secured one of Australia’s most promising football prospects with goalkeeper Sally James.
James thrived with opportunity at Canberra last season. She will be given the responsibility of replacing Matildas Olympic hero Teagan Micah.
“We’re excited to have one of Australia’s best young keepers joining the Club this season,” coach Rado Vidosic said.
“Sally is a proactive, modern goalkeeper, who will suit our style of play well. She’s a hard worker and there’s no doubt she has a promising future.
“We look forward to her arriving in Melbourne and working with her to help her reach her full potential.”
James impressed many observers last season with confident performances for Canberra. Despite being hampered by injuries, she was called into the Matildas Talent ID camp and then the Olympic Transition camp in Sweden.
City has amassed considerable talent in their off-season. James joins a defense including Naomi Chinnama, Emma Checker, Rebekah Stott, Kaitlyn Torpey, and Tori Tumeth.
After having the second-worst defensive record last season, Vidosic has begun amassing new and returning players to prevent a recurrence.

At City, James will have the chance to enhance her already exciting reputation. She is looking forward to joining the club that has produced two of the current Matildas goalkeepers.
“I decided to join City to step out of my comfort zone and to challenge myself in a new environment,” the new recruit said.
“The coaching staff have shown a lot of faith in me, and I’ll give 100% of myself to repay that.
“I’m excited to meet the team and the coaching staff, as well as learning the City style of play.”
Melbourne City has recruited a young goalkeeper with everything to prove and the talent to do so. They have signed a capable shot-stopper and a player on the national team radar.
The signature of James from a well-performing Canberra side is a huge boost for City. The former champions appear increasingly well placed to bounce back from a difficult campaign.
James is a player that has shown she belongs in the W-League, and City fans can look forward to some commanding and spectacular saves in the coming season.
