Newcastle is officially through to the 2022 NRLW Grand Final, taking home a crushing 24-point victory on Sunday afternoon at Suncorp Stadium.

Having defeated the Dragons just one week earlier, the Knights came into the game high on confidence and continued to ride the wave of momentum right through to the opening minutes.

Knights fullback Tamika Upton starred from the opening moments on her return from injury and did not let up all afternoon, finishing with two tries, 11 tackle breaks, and covering 50 post-contact metres.

Newcastle got off to a strong start, scoring the opening try through Upton, who burst over the line at the five-minute mark before Millie Boyle doubled the lead just four minutes later with brutal strength.

St. George Illawarra did respond in the 12th minute through a brilliant interception by Teagan Berry, who stormed through all the way to the try line, adding the Dragons’ first points of the afternoon.

After a 33-minute try to Kirra Dibb, Newcastle took an 18-point advantage into the main break, a margin not out of reach for last year’s Grand Finalists.

It was a relatively slow start to the second half, however, that quickly changed with two Newcastle tries in the space of three minutes. Upton doubled her tally with a piece of individual dominance, showcasing blistering speed with a 53rd-minute try.

When Dibb converted the 56th-minute try from Kiana Takairangi, Newcastle would claim a 24-point victory and officially win through to the 2022 Grand Final.

Newcastle will face off against the Parramatta Eels in Sunday afternoon’s Grand Final at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
