Former A-League official Jarred Gillett will make history this weekend when he becomes the first ever foreign referee in the English Premier League.

Former A-League official Jarred Gillett will make history this weekend when he becomes the first ever foreign referee in the English Premier League.

The 34-year-old will officiate the game between Newcastle United and Watford FC at midnight AEST on Saturday evening.

Gillett began his professional career in the A-League in 2010 and would referee games in Australia for the following nine years.

During his time in the A-League, Gillett officiated five grand finals, including four consecutive from 2016-2018.

Gillett also spent stints refereeing matches in the J-League, Indian Super League, the Chinese Super League and the Saudi Professional League.

In 2019, Gillett made the decision to move to the United Kingdom to commence a post-doctoral research position at John Moores University.

Gillett spent his first two years in England’s Select Group 2 of match officials. His first match in England was a League Two game between Morecambe FC and Cheltenham Town FC on the April 22, 2019.

Two weeks later, Gillett was promoted two divisions as he officiated a Championship match between Blackburn Rovers and Swansea City on the final day of the 2018/19 season.

Gillett regularly refereed Championship matches over the next two seasons before being promoted to England’s Select Group 1 of match officials in June 2021.

The Australian’s rise to the top is a credit to his ability and professionalism as a referee and will continue to earn the respect of other officials, players, and fans.

Australians can watch Gillett’s first EPL match on Optus Sport when Watford FC host Newcastle United at Vicarage Road on Sunday 12:00am AEST.
