Geelong managed to secure Suns midfielder Jack Bowes along with Pick 7 in what was a superb piece of business from the reigning premier.

Gold Coast Suns midfielder Jack Bowes is now a member of the Geelong Cats after what can only be described as the deal of the trade period by the reigning premier.

The Suns wanted to offload Jack Bowes’ salary from its books. The sweetener for Chris Scott’s men is that, along with Bowes, they managed to score themselves Pick 7 in this year’s draft as part of the deal.

Cats Head of List Management Andrew Mackie was happy that the club managed to secure the deal.

“Jack’s signature is exciting news for the Club, we had identified Jack as a player of interest for some time and we’re extremely happy to add him to our playing squad,” Mackie said via the clubs’ official website.

“He is a quality person of great character and we know Jack will be a great fit for our Club.

“Thank you to Craig Cameron and the Suns for the diligent and respectful conversations in working through this trade.”

Bowes was taken with Pick 10 in the 2016 AFL Draft and played 83 games for the Suns. He will now ply his trade with the reigning premiers.

The lure of more midfield minutes was something that appealed to Bowes about playing at the Cats. Something that he wasn’t going to get with the Suns.

What does Bowes bring to Geelong?

With the retirement of club legend Joel Selwood, a spot has opened up in Geelong’s midfield, one that the 24-year-old is sure to take.

The midfielder has class and good ball skills in abundance. The Cats are getting a player who has good upside and will add some speed and excellent ball use to the Geelong midfield brigade.

In adding Bowes, the Cats have added a player who knows the AFL system well. He is looking at becoming a bonafide midfielder in the competition and will get the chance at Geelong.

Many have questioned the move, but it is clear that the Cats wanted Bowes, and they got their man. The 24-year-old only managed five games last season for the Suns. He averaged 15 disposals as he struggled to break into Stuart Dew’s side.

The addition of the former Sun adds depth to a Cats side that has several young players coming through the ranks. Add to that their Pick 7, which was involved in the deal, and Chris Scott is rebuilding on the fly.

Many are still wondering exactly how Geelong managed to snare Bowes and Pick 7 for a third-round selection. But the Cats managed to pull it off.
