Anthony Munkara, Alwyn Davey Jr. and Jayden Davey are officially Essendon players.

Supremely talented Tiwi Islander Anthony Munkara has joined Essendon after being overlooked in the National Draft, joining the club as a Category-B Rookie.

Munkara fell into Essendon’s Next Generation Academy zone in the Tiwi Islands, but played his football in South Australia and with the Allies in the State Championships.

He’s a beautifully balanced forward that kicks off both feet and aggressively takes the game on with speed and an elite fend-off. Clubs simply didn’t see enough of him to make the selection, given he returned home due to personal tragedies midway through the year.

His best game came against the best opposition – representing Australia he was mercurial against Collingwood’s VFL side, looking a level above some of those VFL-listed players.

Essendon list manager Adrian Dodoro confirmed the news at Marvel Stadium on Tuesday night.

“Anthony Munkara will be coming on-board as a Category-B (rookie),” he told media.

“He’s an Essendon player as of tonight.

“He’s a hugely talented young man from the Tiwi Islands, part of our Academy and we’re looking forward to bringing him down tomorrow with the Davey boys.”

The Dons also matched a bid on Alwyn Davey Jr. (Pick 45), and selected Jayden Davey (Pick 54) to round out a terrific night that started with key defender Lewis Hayes at Pick 25.

Davey was the big slider of the draft – but not due to ability. Given the Dons were matching a bid wherever it fell, clubs took no interest in the gifted midfielder.

The Bombers are equally as excited to welcome Jayden, who has suffered multiple knee injuries but has as much talent as his highly-rated twin brother.

Dodoro even thinks Alwyn could feature at AFL level as soon as next season.

“Alwyn’s already played VFL football for us before this year, and he acquitted himself quite well, so we think he can make the step up.

“Jayden probably won’t play next year, so we’ll rehab him the entire year… the plan is to put him on the long-term injury list as soon as possible and get him right.”
