Entering her 10th season at the club, ever-reliable Gabi Simpson has signed on once again with the Queensland Firebirds.

A two-time championship player, Simpson was a key part of the Firebirds run of four consecutive grand finals across 2013 to 2016.

The 28-year-old enters her 10th season in the purple dress, as her side continues to search for further success. If she’s given the role again, she’ll also be the captain of the club for the sixth season straight.

Simpson spoke on the decision behind staying in Queensland again.

“Since I first moved up when I was 20, the club has been my home, so now to be signing up for my tenth season here is extremely special,” Simpson said.

“We’ve worked really hard this year and done a lot of groundwork to set a foundation that can put out really good performances, and I think what we learnt will be absolutely vital.

“And this group, I have never seen a group more driven to get the success that we want for this club.”

An experienced campaigner at national level as well, Simpson has represented Australia since 2009 in under 17s.

Her senior debut came in the 2015 Constellation Cup, previously playing in the silver medal winning Fast5 competition in 2013.

Simpson most recently represented Australia earlier in 2021, where she had two deflections and took three centre pass receives in the first game of the series.

Coach Megan Anderson is delighted to have her star wing defence and effervescent leader back in the team for at least another year.

“Gabi is our ever-smiling assassin who just seems to come out of nowhere for her intercepts,” she said.

“She lifts her teammates with her shut down role at wing defence and her attack through the court gives us so much strength.

“I think 2020 and 2021 have been her best seasons recently and I’m looking forward to her continuing that great form.”

Simpson is the Firebirds’ fourth signing for 2022, joining Kim Ravaillion, Kim Jenner and Lara Dunkley.
