For the first time in eight years, Sheffield Shield cricket will return to Mackay as Queensland face Victoria on Saturday. On that day, leg spinner Mitch Swepson pulled the Queensland whites on for the first time.

This weekend, he will do so for the 50th time, at the venue where it all began. He says that he hopes to make the most of the full-circle moment.

“It’s a bit ironic too because it’ll be my 50th [game] for Queensland. I played my first and now my 50th up in Mackay which is pretty cool,” he says.

“I’m really excited to get back up there and hopefully have a good week.”

The Bulls will have some added confidence going into Saturday’s game, managing to escape defeat against New South Wales last week. After falling to 5/91 in the second innings, Jimmy Peirson and Michael Neser both scored centuries to force a draw. Swepson says that the team were inspired by their efforts on a difficult wicket.

“We’ll take a lot of confidence out of what those two guys did for us. The way they batted on the last day on a wicket that was getting tougher and tougher to bat on just sends a message to our whole group that we’re in for the fight,” he says.

“No matter what position we get ourselves in, we’ve got guys who can dig us out of it.”

Victoria will pose another tough challenge for the team in maroon. The Bushrangers finished runners-up last season, falling to Western Australia in the final. Boasting a mix of youth and experience in their squad, Swepson is pumped for the match ahead.

“They’ve got some really good young talent coming through,” he says.

“They played really well last year to get themselves into a final. With the [Victorians] you know they’re going to fight hard, they’re one of those teams that love a scrap.”

“It’s always an exciting one in the calendar when you come up against Victoria so we’re up for the challenge.”

The match will take place at Great Barrier Reef Arena from 14-17 October.
