The A-Leagues announced on Friday morning that former Arsenal boss Joe Montemurro would coach the All-Stars Women’s squad against his former side.

Central Coast Mariners coach Emily Husband and Western United coach Kat Smith were named as assistants, while Melbourne Victory’s Melissa Maizels named as goalkeeper coach for the side.

Montemurro joined Arsenal in 2017 as coach of the women’s side after a history making stint in charge of Melbourne City, winning a premiership, back-to-back championships, and going an entire season undefeated.

The following season he would make the move to Arsenal, and spend four years at the club before leaving in 2021 to coach Juventus, a role he kept until his departure earlier this year.

During his time at Arsenal, he won the Women’s Super League (WSL) and the WSL Cup, and after his move to Juventus, became the first Serie A Women’s coach to win the treble (Serie A Femminile, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana.)

“I wish to thank the A-Leagues team for including me as part of this historic event,” Montemurro said.

“I look forward to reconnecting with the Australian football public and working with Kat, Emily and Melissa – showcasing the exciting talent of the A-Leagues.”

Having left the Gunners in 2021, his influence can still be felt within the squad, as he was the coach when Matildas stars Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord were signed.

The first two players were also named to the All-Stars squad earlier this week, with Alex Chidiac (Melbourne Victory) and Hannah Wilkinson (Melbourne City) to be part of Montemurro’s squad.

The A-League All Stars will compete against Newcastle United (men) and Arsenal (women) in a double header at Marvel Stadium on Friday May 24.
