Hwang Hee-chan’s match winning goal has sealed a massive upset for South Korea over Portugal to advance to the Round of 16.

Portugal set the tone to start the game, with a goal from Ricardo Horta from an inside pass facilitated by Diogo Dalot from the the near post.

They had 52 per cent of possession, with conservative and controlled ball movement that saw their attack take risks only when they were certain of an opportunity to score.

It did not take long for South Korea to respond, with a corner that would see Cho Guesung pick up the ball at the near post and take a shot attempt. The ball bobbled to the feet of Kim Younggwon, who executed a sliding attempt which hit the back of the net to tie the game in the 27th minute.

Heung-min Son played a crucial role in their win over Portugal, with his playmaking and aggressive approach to the game.

Son led the counterattack and create the assist to the game-winning goal and the corner kick that would lead to the match’s first goal.

Son would also have five shot attempts on goal, with two being on target, putting tremendous pressure on Portugal’s defence in different attacking aspects.

With the game being 1-1 at the 90-minute mark, Portugal looked to break away from the tie with a corner on the left side.

A poor header attempt at the near post from Pepe would lead to a counterattack for South Korea led by Son, who would be picked up by multiple Portugal defenders and miraculously find his teammate Hwang Hee-chan in the first minute of added time to take the lead with a strike to the bottom left corner.

South Korea has made it to the knockout stage for the second time since the 2010 World Cup and has redeemed themselves after their finish in 2018.

Portugal even with the loss still finishes on top of Group H and will take on the runner-up of Group G, meanwhile South Korea will play the winner of the same group.
