he Melbourne Vixens have announced their leaders for the 2021 season as they edge one step closer to beginning their title defence.

The Melbourne Vixens have announced their 2021 leadership group, with Championship captain Kate Moloney being named captain for her fifth year.

Moloney will have Emily Mannix by her side as vice-captain, while injured mid-court Liz Watson and defender Jo Weston round out the leadership group.

Moloney said she is looking forward to the dynamics of the leadership group, with Jo Weston taking on an official leadership role for the first time.

“We all lead in different ways and I think [those ways] really complement each other,” said Moloney.

“I’m really excited about what we can achieve as a group, and hopefully it can be really successful for the team as well.”

Although being ruled out of the 2021 season, last years co-captain Liz Watson will still remain involved in a leadership role, Watson was humbled by her teammates nomination.

“It is really special to be given the position by the team – I found it really nice to know that they still want me involved as much as I can,” Watson said.

“I can’t wait to support them any way that I can off the court.”

Watson also praised Jo Weston on the elevation to the leadership group.

“I am really proud of Jo, she’s been working really hard over the last couple of years and she definitely deserves this position,” she said.

“The group has said that they really value their input. She’s a player that you want to go out there and play for and I think that’s the best part of her leadership qualities.”

The Vixens will begin their title defence this weekend against the West Coast Fever in a Grand Final rematch.
