After reclaiming the trophy in a thrilling Constellation Cup series, this Wednesday will see the Australian Diamonds take on another tough and physical international team that can’t be taken lightly in the England Roses.

With a strong squad named for the home series, The Inner Sanctum has taken a look at the Diamonds to watch.

Jo Weston

Making an impact as an instant game changer in game three of the Constellation Cup series, replacing Sunday Aryang, Jo Weston made her presence known.

Combining with Courtney Bruce, the pressure and spark that she applied on the Silver Ferns shooters in Grace Nweke and Ameliaranne Ekenasio was well needed.

The Melbourne Vixen defended over every shot, and shut down the easy ball movement that the Silver Ferns had in the first two games in New Zealand.

The matchup between Weston and Helen Housby will be an intriguing one to keep an eye on, given the physicality often shown between each other at Suncorp Super Netball level.

With Housby using her strengths of drawing defenders and being able to involve herself constantly, they will be exciting to watch throughout this season.

If Weston can limit Housby’s shooting volume and apply that tight defensive pressure, reading the ball for intercepts that helped the Diamonds win the Constellation Cup, it will go a long way to also claiming the series against the Roses.

Donnell Wallam

Making her international debut for the Diamonds in game one, Donnell Wallam is a player fans have been eagerly anticipating to see.

After a breakout Suncorp Super Netball season in her debut year, Wallam will certainly embrace this opportunity and shine in this series.

Coming a long way since the pre-season Team Girls Cup, the goaler can bring strength to the goal circle, not being fazed by the physicality of who is defending her, holding strongly and working the circle.

Having a strong target inside the circle will help the midcourt, with Wallam taking the feeds from the likes of Paige Hadley, Kate Moloney, and her fellow goalers teaming up with her.

If Wallam can steady her nerves and play to what we all know she can, she will cause plenty of headaches for the Roses’ defensive end.

Paige Hadley

Pulling on the Diamonds dress again after a tough injury campaign in the Commonwealth Games, Hadley will lead the team for the England series.

Bringing plenty of experience in the absence of the missing Steph Wood and Liz Watson, Hadley is no stranger when it comes to leadership at club level with the NSW Swifts’ premiership-winning campaigns.

She has the capability to direct play and be a steady head in the midcourt. Her feeds and timing move the ball well into the goal circle to get her goalers involved in games.
