Australia’s Jason Belmonte and Sam Cooley have progressed through to match play at the 2022 PBA USBC US Open.
Carrying his PBA Players Championship form through for another week, Australia’s Jason Belmonte has completed qualifying of the 2022 PBA USBC US Open in third position.
After a respectable first two rounds, Belmonte kicked it up a gear. Surging up the leader board with a quality third and fourth round, he finished with a total of 6877 for his 32 games, an average of 214.91.
Australia’s other hope, ‘Ice Man’ Sam Cooley, struggled late but held on to the last qualification spot in 24th. Sitting fourth after round one, Cooley battled with consistency as the rounds progressed, throwing minuses in rounds two and four.
Needing to hold out a fast closing PBA Tour veteran Bill O’Neill, Cooley did just enough to clinch the spot by 13 pins. His total was a respectable 6580 (205.63 average) but not up to the standard he would have set for himself after round one.

Experienced campaigner EJ Tackett set the bar for his competitors. A dominant performance throughout, which saw him never fall below second across all rounds, his lead heading into match play was a whopping 271 pins.
Players will now carry their scores over into match play, where bonus pins for head to head wins will be crucial. At completion of three rounds of match play, the top five will progress to the step ladder final scheduled for 5pm tomorrow (US time).
