Former Melbourne Vixens co-captain Liz Watson has put pen to paper with the Sunshine Coast Lightning in what is arguably the signing of the season.

Watson was a Melbourne Vixen for 10 seasons, winning two premierships in the process (2014 and 2020). The four-time Sharelle McMahon Medallist has played 134 games across the ANZ Championships and Suncorp Super Netball Leagues.

The domestic and international powerhouse is able to play wing attack and centre across both levels. She played full minutes in centre when starting her elite career, but changed to more of a wing attack in the SSN’s inception.

Watson was Vixens co-captain from 2020 to 2023 and took home Rising Star in 2017. She debuted in 2014 coming in as a replacement player and was named the Vixens’ Rookie of the Year.

Lightning head coach Belinda Reynolds is ecstatic having secured the Diamonds captain’s signature.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Liz to the Sunshine Coast and have her join the Lightning roster for 2024,” Reynolds said.

“With impressive leadership experience both domestically and internationally, she will be a fantastic asset to the team.

“Liz is a hard worker and brings immense speed and power to the midcourt, along with the ability to hit the circle edge with impact. She also consistently sits at the top of the competition for circle feeds.”
