Finn Delany's career best points total almost carried the Breakers to victory over United on Saturday night.

Although the New Zealand Breakers pushed Melbourne United all the way in their match at John Cain Arena, they were unable to get over the line, losing by six points.

The game was an arm wrestle in the first half, Finn Delany scoring heavily for the Breakers.

Delany, who had 18 points to half time, eventually finished with a personal best and game high 33 points.

It still wasn’t enough to get the Breakers over the line, who were broken open by United during the second half.

Breakers coach Dan Shamir said the loss was especially disappointing.

“Today, we’re just a little bit extra disappointed,” he said.

“We’ve got a functioning roster, but I have to remember that one guy is coming back off a surgery, and two players are new to the team.

“Disappointed but we’re hoping that quickly we can get back to playing winning basketball.”

Delany had little to say about his first half tear however, when asked what helped him to such a strong start.

“Just be aggressive,” he said.

“That’s all there is to it.”

Shamir spoke about Delany’s game in more detail, incredibly pleased with 25-year-old’s performance.

“A lot of those teams in this position, we’re looking to run a lot of actions for him to create a lot of opportunities for him,” he said.

“He took full advantage, came in very focused, had a very good game.

“Unfortunately, one guy playing at this level is not enough and we have to play collectively at a higher level.

“Hopefully we’ll get it soon.”

Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman had strong praise for Delany during his own press conference.

“Finn Delany was amazing tonight,” he said.

“It looked like he was going to have half their score, for the game their for a period of time.

“I didn’t mention that because he was a development player when I was coming through, and to see his growth and the way he goes about it was pretty outstanding tonight.”
