After more than a year out of professional football, former Liverpool and England striker Daniel Sturridge will be putting the boots back on after signing with Perth Glory.
In one of the biggest stories in the A-League Men during the off-season, Sturridge has signed a one-year deal with the Western Australian based outfit after having been linked to the side during the week.
The 32-year-old has won the UEFA Champions League twice and FA Cup, scoring 68 goals during his six year stint with Liverpool. He also was a Premier League winner with Chelsea.
After being released from Liverpool in 2019 he signed for Turkish side Trabzonspor after being involved in English football for 13 years.
He had a bright start to his stint in Turkey, scoring seven in goals in 16 games before his season was abruptly cut short following a four-month suspension for breaching FIFA betting rules.
Unable to find a new club after his worldwide ban finished, Sturridge has now been offered a career reviver from the Glory, who also look to have found their replacement for forward Chris Ikonomidis after he left for the Melbourne Victory in the off-season.
Having not played in a competitive game since March of 2020, Sturridge says he’s looking forward to the next chapter of his career.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to try a new challenge,” Sturridge said.
“When the opportunity came about, it felt like the right thing to do, to take my talent somewhere where I can enjoy my football in a competitive league and try and help the team be as successful as they possibly can be.
“I’m going to put my best foot forward, work hard and try and help the team win each game that comes by and then we’ll see where we end up when the season finishes.
“I can’t wait to play at HBF Park and hopefully put a smile on a lot of faces.”

Glory Chairman and Owner Tony Sage believes Sturridge will play a pivotal role for the club, dubbing him as one of the A-League Men’s highest profile signings.
“Daniel is undoubtedly one of the biggest signings not only in Glory’s history, but in the history of the A-League,” Sage said.
“His arrival signals in no uncertain terms how determined we are to bring sustained success to the club and the lengths we will go to in order to achieve that goal.
“We know the elite-level quality Daniel will bring to the side and are hugely excited to see him wearing the famous purple this season.”
Glory CEO Tony Pignata is also excited by Sturridge’s arrive saying he was pleased with how the deal played out and encouraging Glory fans to get behind the team this season.
“It’s great that we have managed to put this deal together in such a short amount of time and we welcome Daniel to Perth Glory FC,” Pignata said.
“I would urge anyone who hasn’t already become a Glory Member for 2021/22 to sign up as soon as possible and be a part of what is shaping up to be a thrilling year of football.”
