Adelaide Crows AFLW captain Chelsea Randall will continue to perform a crucial role for her team even if she is sidelined this weekend against Carlton.

Adelaide Crows AFLW team captain Chelsea Randall will continue to perform a crucial role for her team even if she is sidelined against Carlton.

Although the timeline on Randall’s minor hamstring tightness is vague, it seems likely that she will be unavailable for selection again on Sunday.

During the second quarter in her side’s win against Melbourne, Randall noticed the issue after competing in a marking contest. Taking the cautious approach, the Crows are unsure as to when she will return to playing after missing the prior game against the West Coast Eagles with a similar complaint.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, defender Najwa Allen was full of praise for the way her captain and fellow defender has approached her interrupted start to the season.

“I think that stresses me out more than it stresses Chelsea out, I asked her the other day how she was and she was like ‘oh me, don’t even worry about it’,” Allen said.

“It’s always better when you have Chelsea Randall around on the field I think. The opposition won’t say that, but for us, it’s always good to have her there.

“She is more of a presence than anything. Even when she’s not on the field, she’s there giving us advice. It’s her presence more than anything that helps us, so we will be happy when she’s back on the field.”

In her 35-match AFLW career so far, the Crows captain has taken an average of over three marks a game, and has accumulated over 8,000 metres gained and 118 tackles.

Her on-field accolades also extend further, named the AFLW’s most courageous player in 2017 and 2018, a trademark of her selflessness and team-first attitude.

She was named the club champion in 2018, and was the All-Australian team vice captain in the same year, having appeared in the side three times (2017, 2018, 2019).

“Chelsea Randall is one of the most selfless, courageous leaders that you could come across, she’s a very strong definition of a leader,” Allen said.

“Like I was saying before, I was worried as to where she was at and she was like, ‘don’t worry about that, we are focused on the game and I have complete faith in everyone to do the job with or without me’.”

It’s taken the likes of defensive mainstays, Marijana Rajcic and Sarah Allan to step up to fill the huge void left by their captain. Allan led the side out in the win against the Eagles in Round 3, taking charge of the defensive unit in Randall’s stead.

Allen has also tipped the young Crows to make full use of Randall’s absence to put their talents on display. Madison Newman had what could be described as her most impressive game in the tricolours last weekend, picking up 13 disposals (12 kicks), two tackles and five marks.
