Australia will now have two drivers to cheer on throughout the 2022 Formula 2 season with Italian team Trident Motorsport announcing Calan Williams will race for the team this upcoming season.
Williams joins fellow Aussie and Virtuosi Racing driver Jack Doohan as the two racers to represent Australia in Formula 2.
Williams has spent the past two years racing for Jenzer Motorsport in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, where he finished 31st in 2020 and 19th in 2021, highlighted by a third place podium finish in race one of the French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard.
Prior to joining Formula 3, the Perth native has also raced in the Toyota Racing Series, Spanish Formula 3 Championship, Euroformula Open Championship and was crowned champion of the Australian Formula 3 Premier Series in 2017.
Williams has spent the past few months with the Trident Motorsport team after entering the post-season test session held last December at Abu Dhabi.
“I’m extremely proud that a team so incredibly competitive and professional like Trident Motorsport welcomed me to its line-up,” said Williams.
“I worked very well with the team’s staff in the last few months and in the FIA Formula 2 Championship post-season test.
“I have a unique chance in front of me and I will give my 100 per cent to use my full potential and show my skills on track. I’m really delighted that Trident Motorsport welcomed me to the team so warmly and believed in me.”

Williams impressive results in the postseason testing were the catalyst to Trident signing the 21 year old for this season according to Team Manager Giacomo Ricci.
“He did very well in the post-season FIA Formula 2 test held at Yas Marina last December. Calan quickly adapted to a car of a superior series and set competitive marks in terms of overall performance and race simulations,” Ricci said.
“Our technical staff was really impressed by his performance, but he also shined in terms of work ethics and commitment that he poured in to be always competitive, day in, day out.
“These aspects quickly created a strong bond between him and the team, so Trident Motorsport is proud to have secured such a strong driver to face a really demanding series like the FIA Formula 2 Championship.”
Williams is the first driver Trident have announced for the 2022 season, replacing Japanese driver Marino Sato who has joined Jack Doohan at Virtuosi Racing.
After finishing ninth out of the 11 teams in 2021, Trident will be hoping Williams can deliver the team better results in 2022 to help move them up the Team Championship rankings.
The upcoming F2 season will begin in March at Sakhir for the Bahrain Grand Prix and will feature a 14-round calendar with two races per event.
