TAB Phoenix finalist Billy Creek has secured his maiden group victory in the 2022 Group 3 Bathurst Cup on Friday night.

TAB Phoenix finalist Billy Creek has secured his maiden group victory in the 2022 Group 3 Bathurst Cup on Friday night.

Starting an outside chance, in a field that included 2022 National Derby winner Slingshot Hooks, Billy Creek showed class. A blistering second half of the race setting up the victory.

His work was cut out for him from the start, with Analysing exploding from box 5 to take a commanding lead. Sitting on the inside of Crocodile Vella, fifth, Billy Creek held the rail as others tangled.

Snaring a clean look at the leader on the back straight, he stormed up the rail to sit a length behind, as they rounded the last bend. Switching to the outside as the track straighten, he loomed the winner.

Stretching away down the final straight, he put a length on Analysing, securing the Cup. Chase Me Honey with a wide run late took third.

The win, Billy Creek’s first group victory, making him trainer Ian Gilders first group winning dog.

In the other feature event of the night, the Raymond Smith trained Irinka Andy, was too good in the Bathurst GBOTA Red Dog Maiden Final. With only three races under his belt, he made plenty of mistakes as he battled his way through the field.

Giving Devil Queen a big start, he checked Devil King on the first bend. The contact causing him to run to the top of the track down the back. However he was too speedy in the end, securing the win by a length with a late outside run.

The win adding to an already fantastic week for Smith, after his star greyhound Jungle Duece took out the Gold Bullion at Albion Park on Saturday night.
