Ruby Bakewell-Doran has been named the Netball Queensland Pride in Sport ambassador for 2023.

Queensland Firebirds defender Ruby Bakewell-Doran has been announced as the 2023 Netball Queensland Pride in Sport ambassador on the eve of the inaugural Inclusion Round this weekend.

Bakewell-Doran said that she is honoured to represent Netball Queensland in a cause that she cares about.

“It’s pretty special, I mean I’ve been doing [Thrive with Pride] with the AIS. I feel like that has been a really good stepping stone for this point,” she said.

“It’s obviously something I’ve been really passionate about.”

The Queensland Firebirds will take on Collingwood on Saturday in the annual Pride Match at Nissan Arena. While this will be the third instalment of Pride Match, the defender said that the introduction of an Inclusion Round is a celebration of the work which has been put in by the Firebirds and Netball Queensland.

“The reason [the Inclusion Round] is so special is because of the hard work we do as an organisation as Netball Queensland and the Firebirds,” Bakewell-Doran said.

“It really is a celebration of all of that and our commitment to making really inclusive spaces and it’s just a really awesome opportunity for our fans to see that as well.”

“To wear the rainbow is a really good reminder for the community that we are backing this.”

The Firebirds (eighth) will be looking to get themselves off the bottom of the ladder with a win against the Magpies (seventh) on Saturday. While the first portion of games had them at 1-6, the Diamonds star said that if they can put in a whole team effort, they can get their second victory for the season.

“Facing everyone again, we have realised that [the first time around] it is a bit of a theme for us to put our foot off the pedal in one quarter, and that’s actually all it takes to lose a game,” she said.

“We know we can do it, we’ve done it against [the] Giants, so it’s gonna take all of us to get us across the line.”
