The playoffs got underway this week for our Aussies in the NBA, but not before Patty Mills and the Brooklyn Nets had to fight for their spot through the Play-in tournament.

The week began with Patty Mills and Jock Landale’s teams fighting for their spot in the playoffs through the Play-in tournament before the NBA playoffs officially got underway with three Aussies taking part.

Patty Mills

2 Games, 1 Win, 4.5pts, 2.5reb, 0.5ast

Patty Mills and the Brooklyn Nets started the week with their Play-in game against the Cleveland Cavaliers to determine who would be the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference.

The Nets showed their class, getting off to a great start, scoring 40 points in the first quarter to take a 20 point lead into the quarter time break. The Cavs had to play catch up for the rest of the game, slowly chipping into the Nets lead but it proved too much to overcome with Brooklyn able to hold on to win by seven points, 115 to 108.

With the win, the Nets secured the seventh seed and therefore would play the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs.

Mills helped Brooklyn where he could, chipping in with two three pointers to score six points for the game, as well as being active on the boards to have five rebounds. He also made his presence felt on the defensive end able to block Cleveland’s Lauri Markkanen’s driving layup attempt.

Brooklyn was unable to have the same success when they played Boston in the first game of their round one series, falling just short by one point following a Jayson Tatum game winning layup just before the final buzzer.

It was a close game for the opening half before the Celtics were able to shoot away in the third quarter to take an 11 point lead into the final quarter. Brooklyn almost stole the game after rallying back in the final quarter, but it was not to be.

Mills came off the bench in the game, playing just 12 minutes where he scored the single three point shot he took to finish with three points, unable to get any rebounds or assists. Mills was however a positive for the Nets in the time he was on the court having a plus/minus of plus eight.

Games two through four will take place this week with the Nets looking to get some wins in what is expected to be one of the most competitive opening round series in these playoffs.

Matisse Thybulle

1 Game, 1 Win, 3.0pts, 2.0reb, 0.0ast, 1.0stl

Matisse Thybulle and the Philadelphia 76ers got their round one playoff match up with the Toronto Raptors underway this week, cruising to a 20 point victory.

The Sixers got off to a great start in the game, putting themselves in a commanding position at halftime with an 18 point lead. Their three point shooting was a catalyst to the big win, making 16 as a team while shooting 50% from deep.

The scoring was shared around with Tyrese Maxey leading the way with 38 points, along with Tobias Harris who had 26 and James Harden who did an excellent job facilitating to score 22 points along with 14 assists.

Thybulle came off the bench, with coach Doc Rivers favouring Danny Green in the starting line-up. In the 19 minutes Thybulle played he took one shot which was from behind the arc to score three points along with grabbing two rebounds and having one steal.

It appears Thybulle will continue to come off the bench for the Sixers throughout the remainder of this series, despite him being a stable in the starting line-up for a large part of the regular season.

Josh Green

The Dallas Mavericks played just one game of their first round playoff match up with the Utah Jazz this week. Despite having home court advantage, the Mavericks were unable to win the opening game at home, going down by six points in a 99 to 93 loss.

The Mavericks entered the game as underdogs with their star player Luka Doncic not playing, dealing with a calf strain.

Aussie Josh Green played 11 minutes in the opening game of the series, coming off the bench. Green was unable to have an impact on the offensive end, missing all four of the shots he took as well as not recording any assists.

Green did however make his impact felt on the defensive side of the ball, recording two steals in the game.

Dallas will look to turn things around this week with games two through five scheduled.

Jock Landale

The San Antonio Spurs had a do or die game this week against the New Orleans Pelicans as part of the Play-in tournament. Since the Spurs finished as the 10th seed, they had to play the ninth seeded Pelicans with the winner going on to play the loser of the seventh versus eighth seeded match up.

Unfortunately, in the Spurs case they were unable to defeat the Pelicans, going down by 10 points in a 113 to 102 loss and therefore signalling the end of their season.

Australia’s Jock Landale did not play in the game, with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich opting not to use the big man.
