Coaches have a big dilemma on their hands with automatic captain Kiara Bowers suspended for two weeks ahead of Round 5.

It was a last minute scramble to make changes before Thursday night’s lockout with one day between rounds and just one set of teams confirmed, it wasn’t easy to make informed trade choices this round.

We are officially halfway through the season this round, it’s time to have a good look at who your teams best performers are. Fixture restructuring will again make trading decisions complicated but that is all part of the fantasy football fun.

Player of the round

Anne Hatchard

Hatchard was traded in by many after her last big score in round 2, to then injure her foot and get taken out of the game against West Coast the next week leaving the field with a 37. This week she showed no signs of the injury against Melbourne and was the highest scorer of the round with 122. It was an impressive performance from Hatchard, who had 29 touches and 9 marks for the day.

AFLW Round 4: Who flew under the radar?

AFLW Team of the Week: Round 4

AFLW five years on: Carlton vs. Collingwood

Rookie of the week

With her 98 putting her in the top ten scores for the round, Tara Bohanna is this week’s Rookie of the round. She had a brilliant game on the weekend scoring 2 goals, 16 disposals and 8 marks. She has only played three games so far but her performances have been consistent. Bohanna is making the most of the opportunity the Gold Coast have given her.

Round 5 targets:

Round 5 will see us at the halfway point of the competition. Now it is getting to the stage where your team will want to be settled. You should have an idea of what players are performing well and who isn’t.

Most trades will hopefully be luxury trades where you can upgrade to someone performing better or forced trades through injury or suspension. For games that are being postponed due to health and safety protocols, players are having averages applied so no need to worry about those situations unless your player has a low average.

If you haven’t jumped on her yet Tara Bohanna is a great option for this point of the season. She is capable of solid scores, and with her extremely low break even is a great cash generator at $28,100.

Emily Bates from the Brisbane Lions has a low ownership rate of just 3.1%. She is on a 3 round average of 88 which places her in the top ten average scores. She also comes with a pricer on the lower end of the midfield scale at $58,700.

The Bowers dilemma

The most popular player in AFLW fantasy was offered a two match suspension Wednesday afternoon for an off ball incident in Tuesday night’s match against the Bulldogs. Fremantle challenged the ban which was upheld by the tribunal, this now leaves 49.7% of the competition with a forced trade. In the short season you can’t afford to have someone with such high scoring capacity sitting on your bench for two weeks.

With Bowers being the most expensive player in the competition, these coaches will have plenty of cash to spend. A few scenarios that could work depending on your current structure.

A straight swap to Brit Bonnici, will still net coaches $10,000. This could be an easy option but with a breakeven of 126 any score she gets under that number she will drop in dollar value – bear this in mind but Bonnici should be a keeper from here on out.

A trade to Erin Phillips who is averaging 93 from the past three games is a good option that will provide $21,900 leftover. This can provide a consistent performer in Phillips to your field and another upgrade elsewhere.

Lockout For AFLW Fantasy this week is Friday February 4 6:40 PM AEDT.
