Typhoon Sammy has taken out his first group race last Wednesday night, the 2022 Group 2 SEN Track Traralgon Cup.

Trained by superstar trainer Jason Thompson, Typhoon Sammy was too strong at the finish. The Bendigo 425m track record holder took the hard way home, being three wide most of the way.

Holding level with early leader Hill Top Jonah, before stretching out as the track straightened, a late charge from second placed Paua of Janie wasn’t enough to snare the victory.

Sporting a win record of 68%, the Aston Dee Bee x Zabaleta dog is now 23 from 34, cementing his credentials as a top dog on the track.

The win, yet another feather in Jason Thompson’s cap. With the likes of Black Opal Magic, Black Opium and Hooked On Scotch previously under his watch. Fast greyhounds and group victories have become the norm. This his second Traralgon Cup, with phenomenal sire Light Of Fire winning it for him 28 years ago. .

Special Event Races

Cup night at Traralgon saw a number of other higher stakes races on offer.

The Precision Automotive Special Event over 500m saw the Graeme Jose trained Aston Shine greet the judges first. Not unlike Typhoon Sammy, Aston Shine needed to work hard wide throughout the race. Running away a comfortable winner by the end.

Also featuring a match race. Gypsy Bun and Mr. Fix It battled it out for a $10,000 winner takes all prize. Jumping evenly, the race looked set to go to the wire. Mr. Fix It pulling away to take the lead, and inside line, by the end of the straight. Gypsy Bun, failing to give in, stepped outside and started to muster speed. The move proving the difference as Mr. Fix It tailed off, leaving Gypsy Bun to stride away for the victory.
